21st Amendment Brewer: Hell or High Watermelon Wheat Beer

Saturday, June 18, 2011 - 2:03 PM

21st Amendment Brewer: Hell or High Watermelon Wheat Beer
4.9% alcohol by volume

Buying details:

Purchased a pack of 6 cans for $11.49 at Hudson Valley Beverage on June 4th

This seems to be one of the first beers that my view differs from the general public - as I really liked it, but most people didn't - guess that is why there are so many beers out there :o)

21st
Amendment Brewery is a new brewery for me.  Their beer was only available in cans, which is also unusual for me to buy - but the packaging caught my eye and we were headed to a bar-b-que the next day, so a watermelon flavored beer seemed like it would fit the bill.

Beer pours with a decent head that is nearly white.  The beer itself is of a light golden color - more so than typically for wheat beers - and the beer certainly is an attractive summer beer

The aroma is just ok - you definitely get the watermelon, but there is a lot of sweetness to it and some almost stale notes.  Nothing awful, but definitely the weakest part of the beer

The taste is right on for me for a summer beer - light and refreshing and just enough watermelon flavor to be interesting without being annoying.  This is definitely a beer with watermelon flavors - not a watermelon beverage.

As I started this review out with, a lot of the sentiment out there is negative towards this beer.  Some reviews almost make it seem like the got a bad batch or something.  Others I think just prefer more complex beer - this is a fairly simple wheat beer with some watermelon flavors.  But to me, that is pretty darn good for picnics, and bar-b-ques, and summer in general

I give this beer $4.5 a pint, so $11.49 for 6 ain't too shabby.
